Within the numbers: (W30-L39-T13 - 218GF 267GA 73Pts), 4th in Conference 1, 9th Overall.)
It took pretty much all of the 82 games to clinch a playoff spot pour Les Canadiens. Some positives to take on this season, les Habitants had the 3rd best Penalty Kill unit at 82.14% combined with the 2nd fewest minutes in the sin bin at 806 PM's. On the flip side, Stone Wall has seen enough rubber to open up a Goodyear tire plant of his own. The team collectively had the worst goal against average in the league at 3.26 with 267 lamplighters behind Wall.
During the season, Les Canadiens addressed the face-off troubles by acquiring the likes of King Sawyer and Carlton Banks, trades with Detroit and Buffalo respectively. These improvements helped the Canadiens finishing 3rd among the best at the faceoff circle with a 50.81%, behind league leaders Toronto's 52.66% and Boston's 51.19%. Individually Montreal had the one - two punch at the face off circle. Carlton Banks led the league with a 55.39% winning percentage and runner up was teammate Michel Etoile at 55.27%.
At the start of the season Les Canadiens acquired the likes of King Sawyer, Heath Nicholson and Roman Pierce out of Detroit. At the time, the Canadiens were searching for a boost of energy. It seemed the team had no identity. Said to be stacked at the defense, yet still finding ways to lose more than there fair share. It was then the trade with Chicago came about. A trade with Chicago that brought in the likes of Vladislav Galchenko, the Gadjovich brothers, Jonah and Davis, and Chicago 1st rounder. All 3 players are known to play two-way hockey, thus clogging up the centre ice. The last trade of the season saw a trade with Buffalo. It seemed necessary as the Habs were playing better but losing by one too many times. A Face off circle type guy and a rugged type player was lacking. In comes league leader Carlton Banks and Wesley Snipes. Banks was somehow seeing less ice time. Snipes is a rugged banger much needed in RED, White and Blue Line up. A third member of that trade was highly talented Mats Lindskog. Lindskog has set the world on fire in Cornwall this season with 49 points in just 36 games as a Royal.
After 82 games:
Goals: Sawyer 27, Galchenko 23, Snipes 20, Etoile 19, Zendorov 18,Gilmore 16, D. Gadjovich 14, Tsylov 13, Green 12, J. Gadjovich 12, Banks 11.
Assists: Ross 44, Sawyer 36, Etoile 35,Green 35, J. Gadjovich 33, Pierce 33, Galchenko 31, Tsylov 28, Zendorov 23, Gilmore 19, Banks 16.
Points: Sawyer 63, Galchenko 54, Etoile 54, Ross 52, Green 47, J. Gadjovich 45, Zendorov 41, Tsylov 41, Pierce 40, Gilmore 35, Snipes 33.
PIM: Pierce 118, Green 111, Snipes 96, Banks 75, Gilmore 71, Mcfadden 60, Rain 58, Tyslov 49, Zendorov 44, Wellington 38, Galchenko 33.
Hits: Snipes 275, Pierce 204, Banks 172, Green 155, Gilmore 145, Tyslov 120, Wellington 87, Rain 82, Galchenko 58, Mcfadden 53.
SHT: Sawyer 245, Etoile 226, Galchenko 214, Zendorov 180, Gilmore 164, Tsylov 150, J. Gadjovich 124, Green 120, Banks 117, Snipes 115.
SB: Tsylov 118, Pierce 111, Green 91, Ross 72, Rain 54, Mcfadden 36, Sorianen 20,Etoile 16, Sawyer 14, Gilmore 13, Zendorov 12, Snipes 11.
As for goaltending, Stone Wall played 74 games of the 82. Has won 26 games with 11 Overtime losses. With 3 shut outs in the season Wall has also been the 1st star 9 times this year, the most of any
Canadiens player. Here's where numbers could be deceiving. Stone's stats appear to make him the worst goaltenders in the league yet he is ranked Tied for 4th in first star ballots behind Diddy's 16
Gosling's 14 and Bobrov's 11. We are anxious for a brand new season.
