Mr. Paré what has transpired at the trade deadline:
“We had several discussions with other GMs prior to the trade deadline however it was never a good fit. The typical names were brandished out there however to get something good; you need something worth your while. You have to pick a direction. Youth movement or going for it. I believe we have to be patient. Our goal is to make the playoffs and hope for an upset in the 1st round.”
What names were being offered out there?
I try not to divulge these names. It’s not fair to these families. These trade offers are never dead and could always be rekindled at the draft or at the start of the following season. We just never know what the future holds.
What were looking for?
“Nothing specific. If the right prospect made sense to acquire, then that would be the right move at this time.
Were you close to anything getting done?
“We had talks with Chicago, Toronto, Boston and New York. Every interaction had a different flavor.
In the end it just wasn’t good enough to pull the trigger.”
Which players from the farm in Cornwall has impressed you the most?
“Well McEichel has been tearing it up since we demoted him to the farm. More than a point per game and leading goal scorer with 25 goals this season in only 41 games. It’s good for his development and we look forward seeing him with the big club soon. He might just make the big club next fall.”
“ I also like the newly acquired Lindskog. This kid can play. We have high hopes for this kid. 28 pts in 19 games for us. How can you not like his progression? We needed a young and impactful player since we moved our 1st rd picks in Y2 and Y3. We believe we have him with Lindy.
“We have this puck mover in Sorianen at the point. Started with us on the big club put we wanted to give him more ice time. See what he can do on the north American ice. He has 43 points in 34 games.
Can’t ask anything more from him. He might just cause havoc and the next training camp.
“We have two great goaltenders we are excited about. Tommi Choas has been carrying the load for us in Cornwall. A leader between the pipes and with his recent play he will have a serious look as next years back up.
We have a kid Rorabeck that has been progressing well over seas. Has the potential to be with Cornwall by next season. We just don’t want to rush his development.
What is your opinion on the other clubs, where they stand and hopes for the playoffs?
“I personally think the team to beat is Boston at this point. The trade deadline was costly for their youth movement but landed a Holland and Lindholm. This team should be tough to beat.
I think the Rangers didn’t do enough at the trade deadline to keep up with the Bruins. They have a good nucleus however. It just depends on how battered and bruise teams come out of the playoffs.
Toronto is a no-brainer in the other conference. The Chicago’s, Anaheim’s, Buffalo and ourselves are just barely winning our share of games. Unless Toronto beat themselves they should be in the Finals.
Which team did the best trade deadline move?
“Well depending what was your priority. Boston got the now players. Chicago got the future.
Chicago and Detroit have the farms all GM’s dream of. It should be exciting in the next couple of years
as to which GM will have the more successful franchise. In any case , I am sure their fan base will have something to cheer for. “
Where do you stand in all this?
“ Well we are fighting for a playoff spot. We play against Detroit more times than any other team down our playoff stretch run. They want to kill us as they hold our pick, we need to win to surpass Buffalo. It appears that Buffalo is trying to win enough games just to win last place and secure the #1 pick. What a predicament that can be!
As for our future we have a few players we are looking for in McEichel and Lindy. We also hold Chicago’s first rounder. So all in all we are where we are. We just need to see what players will be available for free agency and hit the teams at the fiscal level. We just have to get the right guys at the right time.
The big teams today might not be the big teams tomorrow. That’s why we play seasons.
